What is Plastic Injection Moulding?

In simple terms, the procedure involves the melting of plastic pellets (or, in some cases, other materials) that are injected into a custom-designed mould and then cooled. The finished product is a robust, precise piece that can be easily replicated for volume

Granular plastic is fed from a hopper into a heated barrel. It enters through gravitational force and, as this increases, the plastic gradually moves through the heated chamber and melts. As more plastic enters, so the pressure increases and this causes the liquid plastic to be ‘injected’ into the mould. Once it comes into contact with the inside surface, the cooling process begins and the plastic forms into the desired shape.

The mould then opens, the formed piece is ejected and more melted plastic enters the mould.

Challenges to the Process

The biggest challenge is the stresses that are imposed upon the plastic as it melts and cools. The heating process breaks down the molecular bonds. These then bend and twist as they go through the injection process. This can cause the resulting plastic precision part to have unwanted stress points, so reducing the integrity of the parts.

Other possible issues include discolouration, sink marks, weld lines or burn marks. By far the best way to limit the occurrence of such problems is to use an experienced plastic injection moulding supplier.
